Results Are Not Typical

I had a conversation this morning with a colleague and somehow the conversation drifted to infomercials – obviously not a deep, spiritual conversation. As we discussed the infomercials, we noticed that two themes were prominent. One was physical conditioning while the other was financial. Both of these topics are passions of mine. I often compare the two when explaining a financial topic. Most people know someone who has tried to get in better shape and understand the steps needed to get there. Similar steps would help improve the probability of meeting your financial goals.

Unfortunately, neither pursuit is easy. Both take time, discipline and a clear plan. That is the opposite of what the infomercials were preaching. The fitness segments promised a flat stomach or six pack abs with little to no work. The finance segments promised to make you rich with little skill and in some cases only a few hours a day. Wouldn’t it be nice if either were so easy!

As each infomercial finished showing you how to get the results you desired – whether rich or ripped – they all had the disclaimer “Results are not typical”. This is shown in small print well after the promotion has played on the consumer’s emotions of greed. I am open to the idea that there is someone who gained six pack abs by tying an electronic belt around their waist. I am equally sure that someone became incredibly wealthy by flipping houses. Unfortunately, I imagine most people did not get a flat stomach nor did they get incredibly wealthy in a few hours a day – with no experience (or risk).

Worthwhile goals take time, knowledge, guidance and a plan of action. Gaining financial and physical health are great accomplishments that have the potential to add happy fulfilled years to your life. Remember…if it sounds too good to be true it probably is and beware of the disclaimer…results are not typical!
If you want help building a plan to gain financial health, please contact me. If you want to talk about physical goals, I am equally interested.
