Hi Karen, What is the best vitamin/suppliment for someone to start with who has Crohn’s or IBD but also has a very strict budget. Something that will give them the biggest bang for their buck?
Brad Watson-Davelaar Creator of C.A.P Crohn’s Awareness Project
Thank you for reaching out. This is a great question. You actually answered half of your question; let me explain. Everyone needs a good multi/mineral complex whether they have a disease or not. There are some experts who disagree, but I can tell you from the research I have done, it is a must. Unless you are eating organic and getting your 8-10 servings of fruits and vegetables, along with quality proten and for some, whole grains, you need supplementation. If you have Crohn’s Disese and have stress, take medications, sugeries, antibiotics and do not eat right, you are in dire need of a quality multivitaimin/mineral complex. But what you want is a liquid or a powder multi/mineral vitamin because digestion is compromised with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. There is more than just chewing and pooping when it comes to digestion. In order to break down the capsule you need proper digestive juices, and proper Ph balance; a luxury it seems with IBD.
With Crohn’s Disease and other Inflammatory Bowel Disease issues, there is scaring of the bowel tissue which can then cause the capsule or tablet to not break down. If you are missing parts of your bowel that can also cause problems such as with B vitamins and the intrinsic factor which happens partly in the stomach and mostly in the ileum.
Liquid or powders will essentially bipass digestion and enter right into the blood stream where it can then go to where it is needed. When you are looking for a liquid multi/mineral supplement look for one that does not contain added sugars, synthetics and other fillers that may cause bloating, cramping and increased diarrhoea. With Crohn’s Disease there is enough of that already.
When you talk about price, it comes down to “you get what you pay for.” If you purchase a cheap multivitamin you are getting cheap ingredients, tons of additives and preservatives, heavy metals and bulking agents that you don’t need. Here is a little exercise for you; the next time you are in the drug store, take a look at the “other” ingredients on the multivitamin label. If you do not not what they are… put it back. If it contains sugars, synthetic sweeteners…put it back. You can read more here about choosing a quality supplement.
Here are two multi/mineral supplements I recommend:
PaleoGreensTM: PaleoGreens is a powder formulated from over 70% organic non-oxidized vegetables and fruits. Freeze drying these foods maintain their nutritional integrity with optimal nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes.
Here is the best part of PaleoGreens: it is the BIG BANG for your BUCK! Why?
Not only will you get natural sourced vitamins and minerals but you also get live enzynes that help break down nutrients and increase your digestive enzymes to break down your food so that your body can utilize nutrients better. And if that is not enough, PaleoGreens also contains an enzyme/prebiotic proprietary blend that will help with building the right microintestinal flora. PaleoGreens also helps with
- Cleansing & strengthening the Liver
- Alkalinizing and healing the intestines
- Soothes gastrointestinal upsets
- Relieves constipation and irritable bowel
- Sustains energy
- Mental clarity
- Weak Nails/Hair
- Skin Problems
- Antioxidant Protection
- Immune System
- Increasing enzyme activity in body
- Accelerating wound healing and recovery
What this means to you is less symptoms of bloating, cramps and digestive issues. It may also help your medications to work better, because the liver is less congested and can filter your medications. If you are not a veggie person, or can not digest vegetables for their nutrtional properties one serving has the equivalent antioxidant capacity to 4 servings of vegetables, based on ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity), a USDA-developed method for measuring antioxidant activity. Pretty cool right?
PaleoGreens does not contain grains, legumes, alfalfa, corn, gluten, fructose, artificial sweeteners, fillers, bulking agents, whole grasses, pectin, rice bran which are known to cause irritations to the digestion tract. Another great reason why this product is the best bang for your buck there are no fiber or flaxseed which is important for those who need to avoid fiber due to inflamed intestines and obstructions. It really is a win-win.
If you do decide to try the PaleoGreens, I recommend that you start with a 1/4 teaspoon and slowly work up to the recommended dosage over a two week period. This type of product will detoxify your body slowly and may cause unwanted symptoms of detoxification if taken at full serving.
