What is Hypothyroidism

What is Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism refers to low function of the gland in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone. It is a very common issue and affects approximately 10 million Americans with as many as 10% of women experiencing some degree of thyroid hormone deficiency.

One theory is that the constant exposure to free radicals and radiation caused by modern ecological disasters as well as lack of good quality food and stress are showing its effect on thyroid function.

Your thyroid is a gland located in the back of the neck tissue; it consists of two lobes on either side of the trachea interconnected by an isthmus.  The gland varies in size according to the individual. The function of your thyroid is to synthesize, store and release thyroid hormones.

Three important hormones secreted by the thyroid gland are thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and calcitonin. Thyroxine and triiodothyronine increase the rate of protein synthesis in your body cells and the rate of the energy release of these cells, regulates rate of growth and stimulates the maturity of your nervous system.  In general your  thyroid hormones accelerate the rate of cellular metabolism in all parts of your body, play a role in metabolism of glucose, metabolic energy, maintaining blood pressure, stimulate the formation of red blood cells, and accelerate the use of minerals in your bones with the help of calcitonin hormone.  There are quite a few reasons why this process doesn’t always operate smoothly, which can lead to an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism also known as an underactive thyroid is caused by a deficiency of thyroid hormones called thyroxine, which goes through the bloodstream and helps to keep your main body functions performing at the correct level. This particular condition can have varying effects on adults, usually women, normally ranging from barely noticeable to severe and very serious symptoms and complications.

Stimulate thyroid by understanding symptoms that may prohibit thyroid function

There are many reasons for an under active thyroid. Hormones of the thyroid gland regulate metabolism in the entire body. Deficiency of thyroid hormones can have a negative impact on all bodily functions. A deficiency may be due to defective hormone synthesis or related to the pituitary gland as the pituitary gland stimulates secretion of hormones that stimulates the thyroid gland known as thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH.

There’s no such thing as a hyperthyroidism diet however what you eat matters. As with every part of your body, your thyroid gland requires nutrient dense quality foods packed full of vitamins and minerals that will aid in proper functioning of your thyroid gland; think of it as natural thyroid medication.  If you are suffering with low thyroid function it could be one or a combination of the following:

Low intake of or a deficiency of iodine
Too much iodine
A diet high in processed refined foods
A diet high in caffeine
Low intake or a deficiency of vitamins A, C, D, E, calcium magnesium, manganese, zinc
Too many goitrogenic foods
Too much fluoride
Inadequate amounts of good quality protein
Digestive issues such as lack of hydrochloric acid
Suffer with Diabetes
Dealing with emotions that are affecting the thyroid
